About how many cells do you think are in your body? Thousands? Billions? Trillions?! According to Smithsonian magazine, the number is currently estimated at 37.2 trillion! In Chapter 3, we're going to learn what cells are, how they differ from each other, and how they go about their business. We're also going to jump over to Chapter 9 to learn about single-celled organisms: bacteria and protists.
  • We start with getting to know the cell biologist's best friend, the microscope. In our textbook, microscopes were actually discussed at the end of Chapter 2, but we moved them here. We're going to be using microscopes quite a bit as we learn about cells.
  • In Section 1 we'll find out about some of the scientists who are credited with the beginnings of our understanding of cells. We'll talk about the cell theory and the characteristics that all living things have in common.
  • In Section 2 we learn about the inner workings of a cell. Prepare to be amazed!
  • As we learn about the parts of the cell in multicellular organisms in Chapter 3, we'll warp over to Sections 2 and 3 in Chapter 9 where we'll find out about some very important single-celled organisms.
  • Back in Section 4 of Chapter 3, we learn about how the cell membrane protects the cell by letting good stuff in and keeping bad stuff out.
