I haven't always been a teacher. At the end of 2004, I did a crazy thing. I chucked my successful career as a technology industry technical writer and went back to college to become a teacher! What?! Why?
I had been writing user manuals and online help for, well, quite a few years. I worked for some established companies, like Hewlett Packard, Tektronix, and In Focus, and some wildly fun but ultimately doomed start-ups, like FiberCycle in Roseville and Compassoft in El Dorado Hills. Most of the time it was extremely interesting and satisfying work. Learning so much about how computers work and the software development process satisfied my innate geekiness. I even got to help design the user interfaces for a few products. I really loved the challenge of finding a way to break down and describe a complicated concept so anyone could understand it.
But, after a while, I realized that I needed something new, something that made me feel like I was making more of a contribution to the future. If there's such a thing as a career bucket list, teaching was in mine. I often told myself that, when I grew up, I would become a teacher. So, in 2004, I guess it was time for me to grow up! It was honestly one of the best decisions I've ever made :-)
Thank you for welcoming me to the Eureka Union School District community!
