The primary focus of 7th grade math will focus on four critical areas:
Developing an understanding of and applying proportional relationships.
Developing an understanding of operations with rational numbers and working with expressions and linear equations.
Solving problems involving scale drawings/informal geometric constructions, and working with two and three-dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume.
Drawing inferences about populations based on samples.
To ensure success in these four critical areas our initial focus needs to be on MASTERY of number sense (using all four operations to simplify decimals, fractions, integers, ETC.) and the application of these skills to solve more complex real-world problems. We will emphasize a deep understanding of the material taught with an initial focus on conceptual understanding then discovering the algorithm and then applying those skills to real-world problems. Students will explain their mathematical thinking throughout the year in notes, practice & on exams.
