Specifically, we are looking for:
- Incoming 7th and 8th graders from Cavitt Jr High School extremely interested in VEX robotics and committed to participating in meetings, competitions, and required open house/show case events
- Students in enrolled in Cavitt's STEM electives, or students who have demonstrated programming and robotics building skills
- Students with positive attitudes & energy, ready to represent Cavitt with pride, and demonstrating sportsmanship and respect in every aspect of their engagement with teammates, mentors, alliance teams, competitors and officials
- Demonstrated ability to work well in small teams
- Parent mentors to help guide the team in new concepts, technical skills and productivity

Requirements
- Cavitt Jr High Students
- 8th Graders: Cavitt STEM Elective Classes strongly perferred
- 7th Graders: Demonstrated interest and aptitude in robotics & programming
- Demonstrated maturity to handle meetings and work well in teams
- Season long commitment
- Students with positive attitudes & energy, ready to represent Cavitt with pride, and demonstrating sportsmanship and respect in every aspect of their engagement with teammates, mentors, alliance teams, competitors and officials
- Active parent participation required
- All students must complete summer course work (game rules, online courses, programming introduction) to be considered
Commitments
- Summer homework to learn fundamentals and demonstrate engagement
- Adhere to behavior expectations and strictly follow safety rules
- Attend meetings and be active participants in team for the full season (min 2x per week)*
- Attend all robotics competitions as scheduled
- Tournaments are full-day events typically in Greater Sacramento, Bay Area and/or Central Valley
- Most middle school tournaments are Saturdays, some are Sunday events
- Represent robotics team at Cavitt and Ridgeview open houses (mandatory)
- Parent participation required
- Financial support - self funded team
*Team meets over Thanksgiving & winter breaks
*Additional meetings and/or times extended as teams get closer to competition
The team works very hard during the season! Generally, the team meets 2 times per week during the school year, but with extra meetings leading into competitions! The team will hold a series of introductory/training meetings over the summer to ensure a good fit for the team and the applicants.
Typical Season Schedule
- June-July: Introduction meetings covering competitive robotics, build mechanics etc - the kids dive straight into hands-on learning and have fun while developing their robotics and teamwork skills
- Over the summer fully form kickoff strategy and design for current game
- Aug-Feb: Design, Build, Test compete...and Repeat!
- 3-4 Regular Season Tournaments
- Events begin as early as Septmber, but Cavitt typically targets late Oct for first event
- February: Last month to qualify for State Championships
- March: Northern California State Championships
- April: VEX Worlds (Dallas, TX)
- May: Demonstrations and open houses
Space in the program may be limited based on equipment availability, meeting space size/availability, number of technical mentors/parent volunteers, and other factors. Regular participation in work meetings, and full participation at team events is required to be part of the team.
